Yesterday our team at The Community Roundtable watched Simon Sinak's TED talk Start with Why and it made us all pause. When we first started the company, we seemed to talk about why we did so a lot but as we've grown and gotten busier we do so less - it was a great reminder to bring it back into the discussion because that is what will truly align us with others.
Interestingly, the team discussion coincided with some work I was doing with a client where I realized that presenting the de rigueur 'About Us' slide wasn't really all that inspiring. Yes, it helped people understand what we did but not why. So I put together a slide to help people understand my why - and used the following format: My passion, belief, truth and superpower.
The next slide was a picture of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with the quote that best exemplifies why I do what I do "I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be."
I see potential everywhere and in everyone - and so many reasons it's stifled, which makes me kind of crazed. That potential is what keeps me optimistic - can you just imagine if everyone felt supported and loved enough to explore what they care most about? That power is amazing - and I believe well managed communities can help support the realization of that potential at scale. And the world doesn't have time to do this any other way - we have big problems to solve that need all of our energy and passion.
